1 Stanley, sometimes called “Bun” or “Bunny,” was White’s next older brother, the fourth in the line of six. In order of appearance, they were Marion, Clara, Albert, Stanley, Lillian, and then Elwyn Brooks White. Of them all, White spent the most time with Stan, who was a natural teacher. Stan taught White (often called “En” within the family) how to read.

2 After Katharine’s son Roger Angell was transferred to Hickam Field, in Hawaii, his wife Evelyn spent several weeks with the Whites in Maine with her dog Chloe—according to White, an insane St. Bernard who had running fits, and who insisted on rescuing swimmers who were not in need of rescue.
